They are giving the best education and are offering for specialization, financial management, marketing management, human resource management and computer application to business. An important program is six to eight weeks internship with any recognized institution. I decided to take up Askari Bank Limited for my internship because it is a competing Bank nowadays and gives a good training to the internees. So in order to learn more this was my choice. This report is about my internship that I have undergone at Askari Bank Limited Multan Branch from 2nd June 2008 to 18th July 08. During my internship I am able to learn practical aspect of business, and get good working experience. On the very first day of my internship I reported to Operation Manager Mr. Noor ul Islam. He gave me small introduction of the Bank and introduced me to the staff of the Bank. Every internee is rotated among the Bank’s departments and so was I. This rotation is done in order to have general concept regarding Bank’s functions, operations and policies. In this rotation the stay in department is usually a week. I have learned more about the Basic Banking, Credits and Foreign Trade department and have given below the caption of activities I was involved in during the period of six weeks. During my internship I found that Askari Bank is a best Bank in Multan because most of the Exports and Imports in Multan are done through this Bank. Multan is one of the cotton growing cities of Pakistan. Most of the businesses in Multan are directly or indirectly linked to cotton that is also the case with Askari Bank’s clients. Because Multan is an Agricultural City, and its major export is Cotton and Mango. So its export is done on seasonal basis. In the season of cotton and Mango export Askari Bank get its target easily but difficult for it to get its target in the off season. Low profit rates used to be one of the major reasons for not meeting the deposit targets. The profit rates on Askari deposit schemes were quite low when compared with other Banks especially with the National Saving Centers, but now Askari Bank is giving a comparatively high profit rates to its customers. In today’s every customer is a rational customer, he knows the value of money and wants a best return on his money. It has an opportunity to do aggressive marketing to increase its business. †¢ AKBL may increase its branches in competitive areas Threats: †¢ AKBL has many competitors, which are continuously increasing its products and marketing aggressively. Ratio Analysis The information contained in the four basic financial statements is of major significance to various interested parties who regularly need to have relative measures of the company’s operating efficiency. Relative is the key word here, because the analysis of financial statements is based on the use of ratios or relative values. Ratio analysis involves methods of calculating and interpreting financial ratios to analyze and monitor the firm’s performance. The basic inputs to ratio analysis are the firm’s income statement and balance sheet. |Ratios |2007 |2006 | |Current ratio |1. 03 |1. 04 | |Total asst turnover |0. 11 |0. 09 | |Debt ratio |0. 93 |0. 3 | |Gross Profit margin |0. 11 |0. 22 | |Operating profit margin |0. 21 |0. 12 | |Net profit margin |0. 22 |0. 26 | |ROA |0. 02 |0. 02 | Earning asset to total assets Earning assets are the assets which are very important for any company for the bank earning assets are the assets on which bank can earn its profit which may includes loans, advances, operating fixed assets and other assets on the loans and advances bank can make profit by giving or investing in some where so Askari Bank has increased it’s earning assets in the year 2007 as compared to the previous year that show the good trend in the profitability of the Askari bank and the customer believe on the Bank. Ratio tells that on what percentage earning assets contribute the total assets. Well bank also has increased it’s earning assets ratio shows the more profitability of the bank as it can be shown by the profit and loss account of the 2007 that shows the net mark up income more for the year as compared to the previous year so bank is going gradually to the more profitability by giving more advances and loans. Earning assets ASSETS |2007 | | | | |Cash |13356055 | |Balances with other banks |3497054 | |Lending |14444143 | |Investments |39431005 | |Advances |100780162 | |Operating fixed assets |5128428 | |Total earning Assets |176636847 | |Other assets |5535038 | | | | |TOTAL |182171885 | Total Earning Assets:  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Rs. 176636847 Formula: Earning Assets / Total Assets = 176636847 / 182171885 = 0. 969616 Return on earning asset This ratio indicates the how much of earn ing assets take part in making of the profit before taxation. This ratio is decreased during the year. Why   is it so it has different reasons these are as follows Profit before taxation was more in the previous year as compared to the year 2007 because bank has low expenses and less provision for the bad debts and also bank has small investments and limited loans and advances but in 2007 situation has changed and bank increased its loans and advances. Earning assets were also low in the previous year as compared to the 2007 so overall ratio has been decreased but shows the good trend for the making of long term planning Formula: Profit after tax / earning assets = 2,681,012 / 176636847 = . 015 Loan loss coverage ratio This important figure is a reserve account to cover unexpected defaults on loans by borrowers. These are generally referred to as no performing loans. The higher the no performing loan and charge-off percentages, the higher the provision for loan losses should probably be. Consequently, this would reduce net income and earnings per share. Well in the year 2007 bank’s this ratio has been increased to a great extent due to different reasons theses are as follows. Profit before taxation is low for the 2007 due to more expenses because bank is in expanding mode that’s why its expenses are increasing day by day. Provisions and bad debts also increased in the year 2007 because bank also has invested more in this year and ad more also granted more loans. Formula: Provision against non-performing loan and advances / profit (loss) before tax = 3,920,240 / 2,299,785 = 1. 70 Loan to deposit Well there is a concept that bank’s loans are its assets while its deposits are liabilities. But if a bank has low deposits then obviously it will give low loans because bank gives it’s loans by the deposits and earn on the loans then pay mark up on the deposits to the customers. Well bank has increased its loans to deposits ratio in the year 2007 showing its more deposits as well more loans and that is good for the bank to remain in the market and to penetrate in the market. But profit has not increased with the same ratio because Bank has low mark up rates Bank has more capacity for provisions Formula: Loans / deposit = 14444143 / 11,197,424 = 1. 289 Current ratio This ratio indicates the liquidity of the bank. Well this ratio has been decreased but nt much decreased during the year to a small extent due to Bank has increased its deposits so liabilities have been increased. Bank has increased its assets as well to overcome the liabilities. So overall we can say bank is the liquid enough to pay its liabilities Formula : Current assets / current liabilities = 171508419 / 166214583 = 1. 03 Debt Ratio: Debt ratio remained the same in previous year it was . 93 and in 2007 its again 0. 93. Bank has not decreased its debt ratio in 2007. Net Profit Margin: Net profit margin of a bank has been increased from 0. 12 to 0. 21. Horizontal and vertical analysis Comparing analytical data for a current period with similar computations for prior years affords some basis for judging whether the condition of the business is improving or worsening. This comparison of data over time is called as horizontal or trend analysis, to express the idea of reviewing data for a number of consecutive periods. It is distinguished from vertical analysis or static analysis which refers to the review of the financial information of only one accounting period. Cash with other banks and balances with other banks gradually increased in the time line showing the bank’s good performance and this indicate that bank can earn more by making balances with the other banks. Lending to financial institutions not done in the last year due to more investments done by the bank and by giving more and more advances to the customers but this also has increased the bad debts and provisions of the bank as compared to the previous years. Operating assets has been decreased so that is in favor of the bank. On the liabilities side bank also has increased it’s bills payable that shows that bank has certain increased in the liabilities as well bank’s deposits also increased showing the great penetration in the market place as well customer’s believe on the bank to make deposits that’s why bank’s mark up expense has been increased. Equity also increased in the previous year but bank’s profit has been decreased because bank has invested so much and in the development process so increased in the expenses. Overall bank’s financial position in the marketplace has been increased in terms of deposits and advances. All these reasons are favorable to the bank in year 2006 because at one side bank’s assets have been increased in the form of advances and at other side markup income increased due to deposits because bank can more invest it Balance Sheet’s one portion that is Assets shows certain changes during the year. e. g Cash balances with treasury banks have been increased that shows the bank has fulfilled and improved SBP requirements because of maintenance of foreign currency as well as Pakistani currency with other banks due to this balances with the other banks whether outside the Pakistan or inside the Pakistan have been increased. While investment have been decreased due to making balances with the other banks and so advances increased by giving more to the customers so earning power also increased. In 2007 bank not lend money to the financial institutions. Bank’s operating fixed assets have been decreased to a small extent due to this profit also is increased because bank is the service organization and for service organizations no need of more operating fixed assets. Bank’s deposits and other accounts have not been increased to the same extent as bank is giving advances. Well that shows a positive trend because bank expenses would be automatically decreased that are due to cash management. Bank’s net assets have been decreased because of less operating fixed assets and also due to increase in liabilities. Balance Sheet shows the assets are more contributed by the Advances and liabilities are more contributed y the Deposits that are favorable for the Bank. Overall result is less profit for 2007 as compared to 2006. But this has certain different reasons these are as follows Increase cash and balances with the other banks More advances Increase in deposits All these reasons are favorable to the bank in year 2007 because at one side bank’s assets have been increased in the form of advances and at other side markup income increased due to deposits because bank can more invest it. Applications of Class Room Concept: In Accounts department there was an implementation of   Financial Accounting in making balance sheets, income statements, calculation of depreciation etc †¢ In credits department there was an implementation of different categories of loans l ike personal loans, corporate loans etc which was studied in Financial Management. Recommendations: Already the bank is having a good infrastructure not much recommendations are needed as a manager but few can work :- †¢ Customers should be given some sort of facilities which can convince people for investment and go for Askari bank for Exports n Imports. †¢ Fist floor of bank is much congested, there is needed to work on that. †¢ There is not a proper environment of customer dealing on that floor that’s why customer feels difficulty in that. Accounts department was much congested, so area of that department should be extended. †¢ After biannually closing of bank there should be a get together of all the employees of bank which can give them a healthy atmosphere to work. †¢ Few of the employees used to interfere in others work so they should be strictly advised to perform their own duty well. Remittance Department is working very efficiently in transferring the funds of people due to this system. †¢ The Bank has also started ATM facility in most of its branches. 24-hour Banking is new trend in Pakistan and AKBL has also taken apart in this trend. †¢ One distinctive feature of the Bank is that it is the only Bank working for the welfare of army officers, which was established by Army Welfare Trust. †¢ The productivity of the Bank is very good. Bank is providing a high quality service to its customers. AKBL have strength that most of the imports which are done in Multan are handle by AKBL Multan. Weaknesses: †¢ AKBL has lesser number of branches as compared to many other branches. Due to this problem, army officers can not avail the benefits of their own Bank. †¢ The human resource department is not performing the function of selection and recruitment very effectively. Selection process is not on merit due t o which competent persons cannot be selected. †¢ Bank should boost the product development and increase the range of facilities offered for customers. Bank is weak in its credit management. Bank should lend to very sound parties and increase its payment rate. Opportunities: †¢ Govt. is taking very bold steps to promote IT in Pakistan. AKBL has an opportunity to improve in technology. †¢ AKBL is surrounded by many competitors. It has an opportunity to do aggressive marketing to increase its business. †¢ AKBL may increase its branches in competitive areas Threats: †¢ AKBL has many competitors, which are continuously increasing its products and marketing aggressively. It may cause its customers to shift to competitors. Some other Banks have competent taskforce, which is also a threat for AKBL. Because human resource is the most valuable resource. †¢ Due to the increased bad situation of Pakistan in which army is considered to be involved increase the frequ ency of withdrawals, which would decrease deposits. Financial Analysis: Financial Highlights The current year’s profit (2007) after taxation of the bank stood at Rs. 2,681,012 as compared to Rs. 2,249,974 for last year. The deposits decreased by 16. 49% to Rs. 11,197,424 as against Rs. 13,044,593 as on 31 Dec 2006. The loans and advances figure stood at R. 5,521,030 reflect on the improving market image of Askari Bank as a formidable financial institution. Negotiation Skills Business or Task

Questions: 1. Make recommendations as to how each of these processes could be improved and why?2. What process does your company employ prior to any significant negotiation?3. In the absence of such a process, what would you put in place, and why? 4. Suggest ways in which this could be improved and why? Answer: 1. The negotiation is considered as the most essential process while performing any business or task. The good negotiating skills are helpful in making the flow of the business in a smooth manner. As the business development manager for the company, I believe that to select the appropriate negotiator, it is essential that the requirement of negotiators can be identified and major objectives related to the negotiation needs to be analyzed. If the attributes related to the negotiation are well defined, then it becomes easy to choose the most suitable negotiator. Negotiation is the pre-step before initiating any new venture. If the negotiation is not clearly done, then it will create the issues for the further processes in the organization. Other than this, I prefer the selection of the negotiators on the basis of their market position, the availability of the stakeholders to manage or hold the risk, the capability to complete the demands on time and many other aspects (MindTools team, 2016). There are various organizations in UAE which are using various negotiation tools to manage negotiation issues. The use of the tools help in analyzing the 360 degree aspect of the negotiation. After this, the selection of the negotiators is possible. For an example Arab Tec is a famous construction company which is renowned for constructing the most famous building of UAE and also uses some of the specific tools and techniques for choosing the negotiators. While, the Warid telecommunications selects the negotiators after considering their current market position and the contribution of the stakeholders. Similarly, as a business development manager, its my personal responsibility to manage the transparent sequential steps to manage the process of negotiation and mentoring the negotiators. In reference to the UAE, the selection process is quite different. In the UAE, to train the negotiators, the various learning programs are defined on the wide level. In fact, the cross cultural training program and the business dealings are also being defined on the large scale (Hunter, 2016). In my opinion, the appropriate mentoring and the e-learning programs are also framed for training the negotiators By this, the critical aspects will become easier and methods of solving the problems can be identified easily as well. The different negotiation process can be improved by executing the different types of tools and techniques. It is essential for improvement because with the changing scenario continuously, the improvement in adapting and executing is must required. Without implementing the new techniques in the processes, the development aspects cannot be fulfilled. So, for improving and managing the process, I prepared the new plans and also tried to manage the technical aspects of the negotiation and mentoring program. The modern techniques and u se of appropriate models, it will help in assisting and changing the phase of the negotiation in the society and in the organization as well. 2. To perform the suitable and significant negotiation, it is essential to adopt the appropriate methods of the negotiation. To perform the appropriate negotiation, suitable steps are taken into consideration. By following these steps, it becomes easy to perform the suitable task of the negotiation (Craver, 2011). In UAE, the task of negotiation is considered as the toughest task of any project. For managing the process of negotiation in UAE, three elements are taken into consideration. These elements are named as the Identification of the suitable objectives Identification of the other persons objective Basis conditions for the negotiation By identifying these three key elements, it becomes easier to perform the negotiation in a well-defined manner. These three steps are considered as the core steps while performing the suitable negotiation process for any organization. In fact, all the companies select these steps for suitable skills for the negotiation. Similarly, the major organizations of the UAE also adapt these steps to present the significant negotiation. In the first step, the identification of the suitable objectives is defined. It means that the negotiating organization has to set their specific objectives. In the second step, the objectives of the other organizations are required to be accessed, so that the equal coordination between two of them can be maintained. It means that both the parties (i.e. the organizers and the negotiator organization) look forward for the equal coordination and support from each other. Finally, the basis of the negotiation is being found out (Florence, 2014). By identifying the base, it would become easier to negotiate. In this scenario, the purpose of the negotiation can be identified. Various studies prove that the different type of negotiation methods are helpful in identifying that whether the negotiation can be done in a hard manner or it can be processed in an easy way. After completing all these steps, the process of negotiation can now become result oriented and the suitable output can also be generated. This method is helpful as by following these steps in the sequential manner, it will lead to maintaining the flow of the process in an appropriate direction. The sequential steps will also be providing the suitable criteria for the negotiation and subsequent, the chances of the positive output may also be increased. Rather than these methods of negotiation, there are some other direct methods as well which are helpful in doing the negotiations. But its not possible to identify that whether the direct methods are successful or not. 3. The post negotiation and review process are also considered as the most important process, because in this process it can be easily identified that whether the process of negotiation is working in the appropriate direction or not. The post negotiation process includes the phases of its implementation and monitoring. The suitable flow of the process and the major sections of the negotiation are being identified with the help of the monitoring process. Through the monitoring process the bargaining techniques and the negotiation techniques are also identified (Virginia, 2012). While discussing the post negotiation process, it is essential to manage the suitable review process for the negotiation. To review the process of negotiation, the suitable checklist is identified which check whether the process is doing well or not. In fact for checking the efficiency also, the checklist of the suitable items will help a lot. This checklist will further help in defining the major aspects related to the negotiation. The checklist will also facilitate the opportunity for the critical discussion and the critical overview of the major perspectives related to the negotiation. For example, as mentioned above that the Arab Tec is considered as the famous construction company in the UAE. While dealing with the other company, there are various aspects which are signed and the negotiation also occur. To measure that the negotiation process is going well or not, the suitable ideas and the reviews are generated from the co organizations. By this, the developmental aspects of th e organization can be identified easily. With the help of these reviews, the appropriate feedback can also be received which provide the best options for the negotiation. The checklist will be helpful in checking the completion of the task which is decided prior to initiation of the deal or the project. With the help of the checklist, all the basic aspects related to the negotiation are clearly identified in the well-defined manner (Maiese, 2003). But with these fruitful effects, there are some critical aspects too which affect the post negotiation process. The selection of the techniques and tools related to the post negotiation process are not always appropriate. The selection of the incorrect tools and technique will definitely affect the current or ongoing process of the negotiation. The other issue which can be created by the availability of the checklist. As the completion of the project relates to negotiation, so there are the possibilities of changing the checklist again and again. The generation of the error is very common and due to this, the critical aspects of the negotiation can be easily visible. In fact, due to the stakeholders critical aspects of the negotiation are easily identified. There are various stakeholders as well, who is creating the issues before completing the process of the negotiation. So, it is required to define or complete the appropriate process of the negotiation process associated with the d efined checklist, implementation and subsequent monitoring under properly so that appropriate feedback can be obtained. 4. The effective negotiation is considered as the key to success towards the organization. To define the effective negotiation, the example of the organization is taken into consideration. Personally , I believe that for managing the process of negotiation , different styles needs to be taken into consideration. Sometimes, the hard skills are adapted for the negotiation and sometimes the soft skills are also adapted. (Ball, et al., 2011). For defining the practical example of the organization named as the Omnicom, which is the media based company is taken into consideration. The Omnicom is considered as the high profile company in the UAE and also provide the different services related to the media and its process. Being the high profile company it has to deal with the different organizations and also change the different policies related to the negotiation. Some of the aspects related to the negotiation are shown below. As a manager, to manage the situation, I adapted the method of gamesmanship. In this type of negotiation method, to gain the advantage is the primary goal for the success. I also preferred various steps to complete the process of the negotiation. Some of the common factors are the goals, trades, alternatives, relationships, expected outcomes, consequences, power and the possible solutions (Hengsle, 2013). By adapting these steps, the organization can help to develop the suitable negotiating skills. On personal level, I firstly set the appropriate goals and then started the process of trading. As the company is dealing with the media and the aspects related to the media, so the trading can be done as per the requirement. I will also try to manage the suitable relationship with the dealing party to manage the alternatives and agreements. There are various consequences which are defined while considering the aspects related to the negotiation. The company also tried to manage the conseq uences. After this, the possible solutions are tried to find out so that the negotiation can be done thoroughly. But, as the company is very big, the chances of errors are also increased subsequently. So, the chances for improvement are also required for the scenario. I will also try to implement various practical tools and techniques for the improvement of the negotiating skills. Both the simple and the hard type of negotiation skills can be implemented for bringing the change in the system. The negotiation is not considered as the one sided process and it cannot be completed without the consent of both the parties so as to bring the change, it is essential to compromise with the scenario and also tries to find out the most appropriate solutions to manage the suitable process. It is essential to improve the existing process because the improvement in the negotiation aspect will be helpful in providing the appropriate outcome. The other aspects for the improvement of the negotiation skills are the identification of the suitable timeline and the alternatives for the improvement. Considering these aspects, it would become easier to improve the conditions related to the negotiation. Bibliography Ball, A., Rebori, M. Singletary, L., 2011. Heart Essays - Congo Free State, Heart Of Darkness,

Heart Of Darkness And Lies A lie is an untruth. It can be a false statement or a statement left unsaid which causes someone to be misled. In life, lies are told for many different reasons. In fiction, they thicken the plot and overall setting of the story. In Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Marlow dislikes lies and therefore only tells two, both in extraordinary circumstances. Thus, these lies show the following about Marlow: even though he has been touched by evil, he is still a good man himself. He never actually tells a lie, but lets others continue to believe what they already believe in which case helps him justify the lies. Marlow, in the middle of his story, interrupts himself to say, "You know I hate, detest, and can't bear a lie." He does not think he is better than the rest of the world. Lies simply appall and disgust him immensely. Marlow feels there is a "taint of death, and a flavor of mortality in lies." Lying makes him feel "miserable and sick, like biting something rotten would do." Since he feels this way, he would only tell a lie in the most exceptional state of affairs. The first lie was told by Marlow in extraordinary circumstances. It was told because he had a notion it would somehow be of help to Mr. Kurtz. The lie was to allow the brick maker to think he had more influence in the company than he actually had. This lie would help Kurtz in two ways. Firstly, it would help Marlow to get the rivets he needed to fix the boat, and that would provide Kurtz with a means of communication, or a way out of the jungle. Secondly, it would provide Kurtz with an ally who was perceived as powerful. Marlow knew that others were jealous of the success of Mr. Kurtz. Some saw him as the next "Director of the Company," and some were trying to find a reason to hang him. If Marlow was considered powerful, he might be able to help Mr. Kurtz in some way. This is an excellent reason for telling a lie. 2 The second lie was also told in extraordinary circumstances. It is told to "the intended" so that the image of her dead fiance would not be destroyed. She has waited at least two years for her lover to return from Africa, and now he is dead. During this time, she has built his image up in her mind. To her, Kurtz is a man to be admired. She feels it would be "impossible not to love him." She was proud to have been engaged to Kurtz, and would be shocked to learn of the things he had done to people and the surrounding environment. Marlow had to decide if he should tell her the truth about Kurtz and cause her even greater grief, or let her go on believing that he was a good man. Thus, this example was one in which Marlow could tell a lie. The significance of this lie is that it would serve no purpose to tell the truth, so Marlow does not. Kurtz is dead and to tell the truth would only hurt an innocent woman. She had no idea that her fiance had an evil heart. She thought that he was loved and admired by everyone who knew him. If she learned of the things he had done, it would destroy her. Marlow showed his good side by not telling her the truth about Kurtz. This is a suitable ending to the work because it means that even though Marlow has met a man with a "Heart of Darkness," and that even after facing his own darkness, he has come out of the jungle unchanged, for the most part. He is still a good human being with feelings and a sense of right and wrong. Marlow never actually vocalized a lie. He simply allowed others to continue to believe an untruth. First, the brick maker thought Marlow was more influential than he actually was, and Marlow allowed him to continue to believe that. Secondly, the intended thought her fianc was a good man, and Marlow allowed her to continue to believe that. Since he never actually vocalized a lie, he was better able to justify them to himself. 3 Marlow dislikes lies, and only tells them in extraordinary circumstances. When he does lie, it is for the sake of others, not himself. This shows that he is a kind

Images Of Vietnam Essays - Vietnam War, Free Essays, Term Papers

Images Of Vietnam Essays - Vietnam War, Free Essays, Term Papers Images Of Vietnam The United States of America prides itself as the self proclaimed leader of the free world. Since the end of World War II the United States has chosen to use force in order to insure this so called freedom of other less fortunate nations who do not have the ability to defend themselves. According to the United States these infieor nations freedom, has been in jeopardy since the beging of the cold war. Websters dictionary defines a democracy as a government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. Since the start of the cold war, the United States has undertaken the policy that if you are not a democracy than you are not truly free. *The government wants use to think that a democracy is pure and good where as a communist society is corrupt and harmful. The fact remains both a forms governments to control the inhabitants and to lead them so that their life might become better.* The United States gives its citizens the right to periodicly elect their leaders. When the United States entered Vietnam after the French lost the war in 1954, why did it feel, it was necessary to choose to fight the Ho Chi Men lead communists, without even allowing the Vietnamese people a chance to elect their own leader under a free parlimentory electoral system. The Secretary of Defense from 1961 to 1968 Robert McNamara saw the Vietnam conflict escalate from 100 American advisors in 1961 to over 275,000 troops during the time of his departure. Vietnam was caught in a revolution, not unlike the civil war, split in two, north versus south. The battle lines where drawn, the 17th parellel the boundry, the communist state split to the north and a democratic state to the south. However, Southeast Asia was considored one of the most sensitive places at this time durning the cold war. Therfore North Vietnams communist neighbors China and Russia, both supplied Ho Chi Men forces. While the south was backed by the United States(which had been funding the war effort since the French conflict). McNamaras memoirs In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam describes his powerful position in the Cabinet under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. According to McNamara, the United States policy towards Southeast Asia was defined when President Eise nhower delivered his now famous, and widely publized 1956 speech. In which he declared Loas to be the cornerstone to a free world in Southeast Asia. He continued on to explain to the American people if Loas fell to communism it would lead to a domino effect in the rest of Asia and soon onto the rest of world. At the time of this speech Loas political leadership was in turmoil and in danger of turning into a communist state. McNamara uses his memoir as a chance to explain to both the American people and himself what went wrong in Indochina. He starts his story with a brief explanation of where he came from and how he came about to become the Secretary of Defense. McNamara studies extend from University of California at Berkley then to the Harvard business school. He then went on to work for the Ford Motor company where he was selected to be one of the whiz kids, a group of men selected to keep pace and compete with the newly formed General Motors cooperation. McNamara only prvious service for his country came during his time at University of California in the Army ROTC program. Other than that McNamara had no political or public service record up to that point. In a meeting in early December 1960 President elect John F. McNamara describes himself to be at least timid to accept such an important role in Cabinet, questioning Kennedy to find out why the President elect would want to select him. Gun ban is not practical Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Gun ban is not practical - Essay Example Even though some people think that the issue of ban on guns  will control crime, this concern is supposed to be nonexistent owing to the truth  that guns are essential for  safeguarding oneself  against crime, and through  the implementation of ban on guns   the right of people  to bear arms in the second amendment is violated.   Firstly, in order to reduce violent behaviour, the first step is to find out the reason causing it and hence address to that factor. Guns do not bring about the fury; they are merely the way by which the anger is expressed. Concentrating on the causes of the misery, distress, rage and feeling of defencelessness, that lead individuals to resort to crimes will contribute more than just implementing gun laws that are restrictive. As stated by David Kopel (450) â€Å"Making guns illegal will primarily disarm peaceful citizens. That gives a green light for violent criminals to attack everyone – both gun owners and non-owners alike.† Secondly if the guns will be outlawed then only the criminal will possess guns since there will always be a black market for these offenders to get their hands on illegal ammunition. A gun is just an instrument; they dont murder individuals. People slay people. The issue depends on the person using the gun, and what circumstances he is caught up in. Buying a gun lawfully is a difficult procedure. The purchaser has to wait for a time period of two months and so this process assures the incorruptibility and dependability of the owner of the gun. As stated by Hugh LaFollette (316), the power of non-gun weapons for example knives and clubs are also most of the times used for crimes so there is no point in banning the guns as they leave the innocent people at a disadvantage to protect themselves. Citizens who are law abiding have the justification to defend themselves against risks and threats. Due to possession of guns, robberies have reduced significantly. Thirdly, Guns just not simply protect lives, but they

IKEA Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

IKEA - Essay Example IKEA helped people make their everyday life superior by offering a wide variety of products in home furnishing in their stores. IKEA is known to offer home furnishings that are designed well combined with great utility, quality and affordable prices so that it suits the pocket of the masses (Funding Universe, n.d). Company History Ingvar Kamprad is the founder of IKEA who started his career in business at a quite young age. He used to sell matches independently to his neighbours, that he would purchase in bulk and made profit out of it. Gradually his business started growing and he expanded it further by selling seeds, fish, decorative for Christmas and even ball pens and pencils which wondered many, back in the year 1935. From his younger days, he had been quite adept in employing his resources. At the age of 17, on the completion of his school, he was monetarily rewarded by his father. With that sum of money Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA. IKEA was derived from the initials of his fir st name and last name which is ‘I’ & ‘K’ and ‘E’ and ‘A’ was taken in a similar way from the name of the village and the farm named Elmtaryd Agunnaryd where he had grown up and was born. IKEA did not start out by selling furniture but instead it sold watches, wallets, pens, jewellery and other things that he bought at a low price and resold it for profit. The year 1948 marked the addition of furniture in its product line. Initially the furniture was manufactured locally and it was received positively by the customers. It was only in the year 1951 when Ingvar Kamprad focused on furniture and withdrew all the other products from its product line. In the same year, the first catalogue of furniture was published and then later in order to make its presence felt in the competition, the first showroom of furniture was opened in a village named Almhult. In response to such scenario, the other manufacturers and furniture stores pressurised the suppliers which led to the boycott of IKEA. This made IKEA to come to a critical decision of designing their individual line of furniture in 1955. This decision of designing their own furniture allowed IKEA to offer the products at low prices and improving the functions which ultimately made the company successful. The idea of flat-packed furniture came to Ingvar Kamprad when one of his employees sought a table to take home but which he could not fit in his car. He then thought of removing the legs of the table and then reassembled it back at home. IKEA started testing the flat pack furniture concept which proved beneficial for the company as it lowered the costs of labour, need of storage space, transportation and also reduced costs related to transport damage. The Lovet table was the first flat pack furniture product that was designed. The flat pack furniture range has gained a wide popularity across the globe as it not only cuts down on a lot of costs but also because the fu rniture is fashionably designed and the designs fit in efficiently and beautifully in the households. IKEA even has furniture that are made of sustainable resources making them environment friendly choice as well (IKEA Fans, n.d). Source: (IKEA, 2010).
